A look at what’s happening in European Championship qualifying on Monday:

GROUP D

Croatia, Armenia and Wales are all fighting for the second qualifying spot behind group leader Turkey, which isn’t playing Monday. World Cup semifinalist Croatia is in that coveted second spot as it takes on third-place Armenia. Croatia’s midfield leader Luka Modric is on track to extend his record with a 168th game for his country. Wales is in fourth place and has just one win from its last 13 games. It must beat Latvia to avoid being left behind in the qualifying contest.

GROUP J

Portugal is cruising toward qualification as it takes on a Luxembourg team which has surprised many by becoming a contender to reach its first-ever European Championship next year. Portugal is hosting the game and beat Luxembourg 6-0 when they last played, so anything else but a win for Cristiano Ronaldo’s team would be a major upset. Portugal leads the group with 15 points, five more than Slovakia and Luxembourg. Luxembourg is third in a group with two qualifying places after winning its last three games. Its major qualifying rival, Slovakia, will be the overwhelming favorite against Liechtenstein. Iceland, itself once a surprise European Championship qualifier, plays Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The qualifiers have been a major disappointment for Italy, the reigning champions, who appear to be reliving the nightmare they endured during the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. To avoid a repetition of that ordeal, they must secure decisive victories urgently. And adding to the urgency is the fact that their opponents in the upcoming match are also the second-best team in the group.

Following their draw with England, Ukraine have amassed 7 points, positioning them in second place within the group. They are fully aware that if they aspire to qualify, Italy and England are the teams they must overcome, which underscores the tremendous importance of this upcoming game.

Italy have Gianluca Mancini and Mattia Zaccagni returning to the squad, and have included Wilfried Gnonto and Nicolo Casale in the squad. The notable exclusions from the side are the experienced pair of Leonardo Bonucci and Marco Verratti.

Ukraine surprised Gareth Southgate's England with a crucial opening goal in the previous match against the Three Lions. Despite Oleksandr Zinchenko's valiant strike, Kyle Walker's maiden England goal settled the scoreline as both teams left the contest with a point a piece.

The visitors would be happy with their performance against England as they occupy the second spot on the table. With group leaders England already running away with 13 points, Ukraine would want to hand a massive blow to the host's qualification dreams with three points on Tuesday.

Italy's love loss with North Macedonia continued as the underdogs once again spoiled the Azzurri party. Snatching their World Cup dreams last year, North Macedonia stunned Italy with a late equaliser to draw the game against Luciano Spalletti's men.

The reigning champions are secured of a play-off spot as they finished third in the UEFA Nations League, but the European heavyweights would be reluctant to not use this option. With half the qualification games still to be played, Italy would be vying to leapfrog Ukraine and secure a direct entry to defend the European crown.
